Glass shards strewn on a stretch of road in Dilshad Garden area in Delhi’s Shahdara district through which Kanwariyas were to travel on foot — footage of this took the social media space recently by storm with some BJP leaders and Right-wing handles smelling a conspiracy in this to disrupt a Hindu religious festival.

The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage undertaken by devotees of the Hindu deity Shiva in the month of Sawan, during which they walk barefoot to the Ganges carrying pitchers, fill them with water and visit a temple to pour the holy water on a Shiva lingam. The entire journey often takes several days.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena shard his concern over this on X and stated an FIR had been filed and the Delhi Police crime branch was looking into the matter. He also noted that “the road was cleaned within 2 hours by PWD.”

BJP Delhi vice president and cabinet minister Kapil Mishra, who has often been found making hateful and communal remarks against the Muslim community, posted about this on X claiming “some mischievous elements scattered glass pieces along the Kanwar Yatra route for nearly a kilometre.” (Archive)

PTI reported that BJP Delhi president Virendra Sachdeva had said that the glass shards scattered on the road was a “pre-planned conspiracy” to disrupt communal harmony and that it appeared to be the work of “anti-social elements”. (Archive)

X user Raushan Sinha (@MrSinha_), who as been found amplifying misinformation and communal propaganda several times in the past. shared the viral clip on July 13 with a caption that indicated that someone had done this deliberately to disrupt the journey of the Kanwars. The mention of “Brotherhood, anyone?” in the tweet hints at the alleged involvement of members of the Muslim community, as the term “bhaichara” is frequently used by the Right Wing to mock secular beliefs. At the time of writing this report, the post has over 72,000 views and has been retweeted over 3,000 times. (Archive)

In Delhi, broken glass shards were found scattered along the Kanwar route.

Several other users on social media, such as @KumaarSaagar, @ssaratht and propaganda handles such as @SudarshanNewsDL, @OpIndia_com, made the same claim — that the glass shards had been deliberately scattered across the route of the Kanwariyas to sabotage their pilgrimage. Below are a few instances. (Archives 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

Fact Check

To verify the facts, we ran a relevant keyword search and found several relevant news reports. According to a report by the Hindu published on July 14, Delhi police had already made an arrest in this case based on an FIR filed by a junior PWD engineer at the Seemapuri police station on July 13. The person detained is an e-rickshaw driver who was seen on CCTV crossing the same route and carrying glass panels on his vehicle.

The report quoted a police officer saying that the driver was transporting 19 glass panels in his e-rickshaw from Shalimar Garden, Uttar Pradesh, to north-east Delhi’s Seelampur. The glasses fell and broke while he was on the way.

On X, ANI directly addressed Kapil Sharma’s tweet and posted a response by Delhi Police, which said that glass panels had broken when an e-rickshaw was carrying 19 of them from Shalimar Garden to Seelampur. The driver, identified as Kusum Pal, had been detained.

Alt News reached out to a senior police officer at Seemapuri police station to confirm whether their investigation had revealed any angle of sabotage or conspiracy, and the police officer categorically denied the same. “There is no communal or sabotage angle in this case. The glass panels accidentally fell and broke into pieces while he (the driver) was transporting them,” the police officer said.

We also came across a news report by the Indian Express which, too, had identified the e-rickshaw driver as Kusum Pal.

Hence, the assertion that the glass shards found on the road in Delhi’s Shahdara were deliberately scattered to cause harm to the Kanwariyas or that it was a communal conspiracy is completely false.

Troubled road in New Caledonia fully reopens after eight-month closure https://www.radiofree.org/2025/02/03/troubled-road-in-new-caledonia-fully-reopens-after-eight-month-closure/ https://www.radiofree.org/2025/02/03/troubled-road-in-new-caledonia-fully-reopens-after-eight-month-closure/#respond Mon, 03 Feb 2025 10:11:53 +0000 https://asiapacificreport.nz/?p=110535 By Patrick Decloitre, RNZ Pacific correspondent French Pacific desk

The main provincial road linking New Caledonia’s capital, Nouméa, to the south of the main island will be fully reopened to motorists after almost eight months.

Route Provinciale 1 (RP1), which passes through Saint Louis, had been the scene of violent acts — theft, assault, carjackings — against passing motorists and deemed too dangerous to remain open to the public.

Instead, since the violent riots that started in mid-May 2024, residents of nearby Mont-Dore had to take special sea ferries to travel to Nouméa, while police and gendarmes gradually organised protected convoys at specific hours.

The rest of the time, motorists and pedestrians were “filtered” by law enforcement officers, with two “locks” located at each side of the Saint Louis village.

The troubled road was even fully closed to traffic in July 2024 after tensions and violence in Saint Louis peaked.

Last Friday, January 31, French High Commissioner Louis Le Franc announced that the RP1 would be fully reopened to traffic from today.

Gendarme patrols stay
The French High Commission, however, stressed that the law enforcement setup and gendarme patrols would remain posted “as long as it takes to ensure everyone’s safety”.

“Should any problem arise, the high commission reserves the right to immediately reduce traffic hours,” a media release warned.

The RP1’s reopening coincides with the beginning, this week, of crucial talks in Paris between pro-independence, pro-France camps and the French state on New Caledonia’s political future status.

Giant pandas arrive in US en route to Washington’s zoo https://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/pandas-national-zoo-diplomacy-politics-xi-jinping-10152024122919.html https://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/pandas-national-zoo-diplomacy-politics-xi-jinping-10152024122919.html#respond Tue, 15 Oct 2024 17:53:00 +0000 https://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/pandas-national-zoo-diplomacy-politics-xi-jinping-10152024122919.html UPDATED on Oct. 15, 2024 at 3:31 ET

Nearly a year after Washington’s National Zoo sent its three giant pandas back to China amid a lapse in a half-century-old deal with Beijing, two new pandas arrived back in the country Tuesday.

Fulfilling a pledge made by Chinese President Xi Jinping at a dinner with business leaders in San Francisco following his summit with U.S. President Joe Biden last November, the 3-year-old pandas named Bao Li and Qing Bao touched down at Dulles International Airport near Washington.

The National Zoo sent back its last three giant pandas – Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and Xiao Qi Ji – just a week before the Nov. 16 talks between Xi and Biden, which led to a softening of then-tense bilateral ties.

The new pandas arrived via a FedEx Boeing 777 on Tuesday morning and now must be quarantined for 30 days, according to a statement from the National Zoo in May, when the plans were first announced.

On Tuesday, the National Zoo was closed amid the expected arrival of the two pandas. According to the zoo's website, the pandas will make their public debut on Jan. 24.

Bao Li and Qing Bao are on a 10-year lease from China that expires in April 2034, at a cost of $1 million per year, according to the zoo.

Panda diplomacy

The last round of the pandas at the National Zoo, which is a part of the Smithsonian Institution, had been in the United States for 23 years, and their departure amid last year’s diplomatic tensions caused panda fans to fear that geopolitics might prevent the return of any replacements.

But amid Xi’s efforts to convince U.S. business leaders not to withdraw investments in China as the country’s economy struggles to get back into gear, the Chinese president used a speech to American CEOs following his talks with Biden to pledge new “envoys of friendship.”

“Recently, the three pandas at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington have returned to China,”  Xi said on Nov. 16. “I was told that many American people, especially children, were really reluctant to say good-bye to the pandas and went to the zoo to see them off.”

“Pandas have long been envoys of friendship between the Chinese American peoples,” he added, to applause. “We are ready to continue our cooperation with the United States on panda conservation.”

The National Zoo’s panda program began in 1972 during the normalization of ties between the United States and China amid the communist world’s Sino-Soviet split, after then-U.S. President Richard Nixon’s meeting with Chairman Mao Zedong in February that year.

Geopolitical pandemonium

Despite the political overtones of the past 52 years of panda diplomacy, zookeepers have sought to downplay the impact of geopolitics.

In an interview with the RFA Insider podcast on Sept. 25 ahead of the pandas’ return, National Zoo Director Brandie Smith said that while the high profile of the pandas made for easy news stories linking them to political events, their return was the result of a lot of planning.

“A lot of people look at the news of that day and think it impacts the pandas, but the reality is the return of those giant pandas was three years in the making,” Smith told the podcast, adding that for American and Chinese zookeepers the priority was on “saving the species.”

A bureaucratic process to get permits, concerns about COVID and general logistics of transport had slowed things, Smith said.

“I almost take it as a compliment that people think there are larger machinations at work and that this program is part of it,” she said, “but the reality is that everything we have done has been planned.”

Indian border fence cutting off crucial supply route to Myanmar’s Sagaing region https://www.rfa.org/english/news/myanmar/india-myanmar-border-fence-09272024170421.html https://www.rfa.org/english/news/myanmar/india-myanmar-border-fence-09272024170421.html#respond Sat, 28 Sep 2024 15:37:15 +0000 https://www.rfa.org/english/news/myanmar/india-myanmar-border-fence-09272024170421.html Read RFA coverage of this topic in Burmese

India is erecting a fence along its border with Myanmar, which residents of Myanmar’s Sagaing region say is cutting off trade routes and driving up the price of goods.

More than 1.6 million people have been displaced by conflict in Myanmar since February 2021, when the military seized power in a coup d’etat, according to the United Nations, with more than 50% of them – an estimated 821,000 people – from the Sagaing region.

Many of the displaced there rely on cross-border trade from India for goods and medicine.

Trade at the Tamu-Moreh border gate connecting India’s Manipur state to Sagaing was suspended in 2021 but area residents have continued to exchange goods through informal routes.

India began construction of its border fence in Manipur state in June 2022 amid an influx of refugees from Myanmar, and Indian Union Government Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah said last week that around 30 km (20 miles) of the barrier have since been completed.

Meanwhile, the junta has blocked roads leading to the checkpoint on the Myanmar side, and ethnic Chin commentator R. Lakher told RFA Burmese that India’s fence will make it difficult for residents in Sagaing to obtain goods and medicine from across the border.

“The price of commodities has already significantly increased [because of the project],” he said. “This border area is relying on India for all its basic commodities and medical treatments. The local populace will surely suffer a lot of difficulties if the border fencing is completed.”

A resident of Sagaing region who, like others interviewed for this report, spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, told RFA that those who need to cross the border are already being forced to do so at unfenced areas, where they must pay higher fees for transportation.

“If the border fencing is completed … residents who have close relatives on both sides will face various difficulties,” he said.

India shares a 1,643-km (1,020-mile) border with Myanmar, 398 km (250 miles) of which are located along Manipur state. The Indian government has earmarked US$3.7 billion to build the border fence, which will also cover 520 km (325 miles) in Arunachal Pradesh, 215 km (135 miles) in Nagaland and 510 km (320 miles) in Mizoram.

Another resident of Sagaing told RFA that the border fence will impact people on both sides.

"Not only the people of Myanmar, but also the people of India will suffer difficulties because people from both sides already have a long history of crossing the border,” he said.

Salai Dokhar, the co-founder of aid agency India for Myanmar, said that the Manipur government is urgently erecting the fence because Myanmar’s anti-junta forces have gained control over its border areas.

"As Myanmar rebel forces are in control of border areas close to India, the Indian government will have to deal with them, which I believe it does not want to do,” he said.

Invitation to rebel forces

While the Indian government conducts bilateral negotiations with Myanmar’s junta, it made overtures last week to the country’s rebel forces for the first time since the coup, according to a report by Reuters news agency.

The report said that India extended invitations to Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government, or NUG, as well as to the China National Front, the Kachin Independence Army and the Arakan Army to attend a seminar by the government-funded Indian Council of World Affairs.

A source with knowledge of the issue told RFA that Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar is leading the preparation for the event, the theme of which will be "Constitutionalism and Federalism."

The source said that only the Chin National Front had confirmed their registration to attend the seminar, while the other three groups have yet to respond.

Observers welcomed the move, which they called “pragmatic,” given the junta’s weakening grip on power in Myanmar’s border regions.

“All the Indian borders [with Myanmar] are close to areas under the control of these [anti-junta] forces, and this shows that India has adopted more pragmatic strategies suitable for the situation on the ground," said an ethnic affairs analyst, who also declined to be named due to fear of reprisal.

Attempts by RFA to reach the Indian Embassy in Yangon and the Myanmar Embassy in New Delhi about the border fence went unanswered Friday, as did attempts to contact junta spokesperson Major General Zaw Min Tun for comment on India’s invitation to anti-junta groups.

Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar told his junta counterpart Than Swe in New Delhi on July 26 that his government is open to engaging with all stakeholders in resolving Myanmar's crisis.

“As Jewish New Yorkers we vehemently condemn Prime Minister Netanyahu’s assault on Lebanon and genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. We will continue to raise our voices in dissent until the United States government stops arming Israel and Palestinians are able to live with the full freedom and dignity they deserve,” said Jay Saper of Jewish Voice for Peace.

Netanyahu’s visit to New York comes a week after pagers and walkie talkies were detonated across Lebanon, killing at least 70 and maiming thousands of people. Only a few days after the attacks, Israel launched hundreds of airstrikes, killing over 500 people in a single day — one of the highest daily death tolls of any war in recent history — and injuring another 1,600.

“Netanyahu is not welcome in New York,” said actor and activist Rowan Blanchard.

Netanyahu’s visit also marks nearly a year of a relentless bombing of Gaza that has killed more than 41,000 Palestinians, which has led the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for the prime minister’s crimes against humanity.

“Our world leaders have done nothing to stop Netanyahu and his genocidal administration from murdering over 15,000 children and several times more adults. As he plans to escalate the slaughter, we must be the ones to stop him,” said Munir Marwan of

Palestinian Youth Movement.

The protesters blockaded the Israeli motorcade route outside of the Midtown Manhattan headquarters of the United Nations, bringing traffic to a halt near the East River. They wore red shirts that read “Stop Arming Israel” and unfurled banners that read

“Stop the Genocide” and “No War Criminals Welcome in NYC.” They chanted “Stop Bombing Gaza.”

The arrests kick off what is expected to be a daylong protest of Netanyahu, with hundreds anticipated outside the United Nations later in the afternoon. Netanyahu’s last visit to the United States, when he addressed a joint session of Congress on July 24, was also with massive protests in the streets and one of the largest sit-ins in the history of Congress that led to the arrest of over 200 people.

Taipei-based Aleksandra Bielakowska was held for six hours, searched and questioned after arriving at Hong Kong's International Airport on Wednesday, the group said in a statement.

She had been planning to meet with journalists in the city in the wake of a stringent new security law passed last month under Article 23 of the city's Basic Law, and to monitor a hearing in Lai's ongoing trial, the group said.

"[They asked] what I'm doing here, if it's a work-related visit. I said of course, yes, because I'm [an] NGO worker," Bielakowska said in an interview with RFA Cantonese on Thursday after her return to Taiwan.

"They searched my belongings, in depth, in detail -- they scanned them twice, checked my shoes, everything, checked how much money I had,” she said, adding that 12 officers and staff were watching her the whole time she was being interviewed and searched.

"The person who questioned me was an immigration officer, plus there was a customs officer, but I couldn't tell if there were any police or plainclothes officers inside of the room, because they hadn't given me any IDs," Bielakowska said. "But there were some people who didn't look like immigration officers."

Eventually, she was given a notice of refusal of entry, with a reason she described as "nebulous." Immigration officers refused to clarify the reason for the decision, even when asked repeatedly, Bielakowska said.

Hong Kong's immigration authorities have a stated policy of not commenting on individual cases. A form handed to Bielakowska said only that she would be “imminently/immediately” removed from the city “within a reasonable time,” and that this justified her detention.

Article 23

The Safeguarding National Security Law, known as “Article 23,” was billed by the government as a way to protect the city from interference and infiltration by "hostile foreign forces" that Beijing blames for waves of mass popular protests in recent years.

But its critics -- and some of the city's residents -- say it will likely have far-reaching effects on human rights and freedom of expression that go further than the 2020 National Security Law under which Lai is being prosecuted, with a far broader reach and tougher penalties.

Jimmy Lai stands accused of "collusion with foreign forces" and faces a potential life sentence, yet the case against him relies heavily on opinion articles published in his now-shuttered flagship Apple Daily newspaper.

Bielakowska, who was allowed into Hong Kong in December 2023 to monitor the start of Lai's trial, said Reporters Without Borders, or RSF, isn't a political organization and that she wasn't doing anything "seditious."

"We just fight for the rights of journalists and press freedom around the world," she said. "It's our obligation as an NGO to attend the hearings and the trials."

Bielakowska's colleague, Asia-Pacific Bureau Director Cédric Alviani, was allowed to enter Hong Kong, but returned to Taipei the next day "for security reasons," she said.

‘Dire erosion’

RSF said it was "appalled" by the treatment of Bielakowska, who was "simply trying to do her job."

"We have never experienced such blatant efforts by authorities to evade scrutiny of court proceedings in any country, which further highlights the ludicrous nature of the case against Jimmy Lai, and the dire erosion of press freedom and the rule of law in Hong Kong," RSF's Director of Campaigns Rebecca Vincent said in a statement, calling for an immediate explanation from the Hong Kong authorities.

Vincent said the remainder of Lai's national security trial "cannot take place in darkness."

"The world must know what is happening in Hong Kong, which has implications for global press freedom," she said.

ENG_CHN_HK_RSFDeniedEntry_04112024.4.JPG

The group said it was the first time any of its representatives has been denied entry or questioned at Hong Kong's airport. Its staff had t

raveled there without hindrance in June and December 2023, and were able to meet with journalists and diplomats, as well as monitoring court proceedings without any problems, it said.

RSF said it regularly monitors trials around the world as part of its normal work defending press freedom – from proceedings against journalists in Türkiye, to the ongoing US extradition case against Julian Assange in UK courts.

Plunging rank

Hong Kong ranks 140th out of 180 in RSF’s 2023 World Press Freedom Index, having plummeted from 18th place in the past two decades. The rest of China ranks 179th out of 180 countries and territories.

To Yiu-ming, a former assistant professor at the Department of Journalism at Hong Kong's Baptist University, said the questioning of Bielakowska would send a strong message to foreign journalists and international organizations that follow developments in Hong Kong.

"Most importantly, this will have a negative impact on the way that foreign media and the international community view Hong Kong, particularly the impact of the Article 23 legislation on press freedom in Hong Kong," To told RFA Cantonese in an interview on Thursday.

He said that rather than laying down clear guidelines about who will be denied entry, they are proceeding on a case-by-case basis.

"I think [such cases] will be subject to review by national security police," To said.

Ethnic army seizes major trade route on Myanmar-Chinese border https://www.rfa.org/english/news/myanmar/kia-captures-five-camps-03292024051057.html https://www.rfa.org/english/news/myanmar/kia-captures-five-camps-03292024051057.html#respond Fri, 29 Mar 2024 09:12:00 +0000 https://www.rfa.org/english/news/myanmar/kia-captures-five-camps-03292024051057.html An ethnic army seized five military junta camps near the Myanmar-Chinese border, residents told Radio Free Asia on Friday.

During an offensive, the Kachin Independence Army, or KIA, captured encampments under junta Battalion 366 near Kachin state’s Momauk township. The seizure also gave the ethnic armed group partial control of a China-Myanmar border trade road after the Thursday offensive.

Since Myanmar’s February 2021 coup, fighting between the KIA and junta forces has raged for weeks at a time over the state’s lucrative jade mines and the rebel army’s historical stronghold near its headquarters on the Myanmar-China border.

The KIA now controls portions of two major trade roads in the state since its partial capture of the domestic Myitkyina-Bhamo highway in early March, in addition to a junta camp under Battalion 142 in Momauk township. A battle further north in Lai Zar caused shells to land in China, burning down several houses, residents said.

One resident told RFA that the junta retaliated with air strikes after Yaw Yung Artillery and Hpaleng Hill camps were captured Thursday.

“Yaw Yung was entirely captured and Hpaleng camp was also captured yesterday,” he said, asking to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals. “The junta’s air force came to open fire while KIA troops were confiscating things in these camps after the captures.”

Yaw Yung is an important strategic camp because of the high-level commander stationed there and its proximity to trading posts with China, residents living near the captured camps said.

Kachin army troops are currently stationed in Lwegel city, about 11 kilometers (seven miles) from Yaw Yung Artillery camp, residents said, adding that they are negotiating with junta troops and administration staff on their exit from the city.

RFA contacted Kachin state’s junta spokesperson Moe Min Thein and KIA spokesperson Col. Naw Bu on the junta’s surrender, but neither responded.

A statement on the KIA's Facebook page on March 28, said three camps were captured on the 27th and two on the 28th, namely Shan Tai, Bang Yau, Law Mun, Hpaleng and Yaw Yung.

The KIA and joint guerilla armies have captured over 40 junta camps in Momauk and Waingmaw townships near the KIA’s headquarters in Lai Zar city in Kachin state as of Thursday.

Live Briefing: Russia's Invasion Of Ukraine

RFE/RL's Live Briefing gives you all of the latest developments on Russia's full-scale invasion, Kyiv's counteroffensive, Western military aid, global reaction, and the plight of civilians. For all of RFE/RL's coverage of the war in Ukraine, click here.

Zelenskiy met with his Lithuanian counterpart Gitanas Nauseda on January 10 to discuss military aid, training, and joint demining efforts during the previously unannounced trip, which will also take him to Estonia and Latvia.

“We have proven that Russia can be stopped, that deterrence is possible,” he said after talks with Nauseda on what is the Ukrainian leader's first foreign trip of 2024.

"Today, Gitanas Nauseda and I focused on frontline developments. Weapons, equipment, personnel training, and Lithuania's leadership in the demining coalition are all sources of strength for us," Zelenskiy later wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Lithuania has been a staunch ally of Ukraine since the start of Russia's unprovoked full-scale invasion, which will reach the two-year mark in February.

Nauseda said EU and NATO member Lithuania will continue to provide military, political, and economic support to Ukraine, and pointed to the Baltic country's approval last month of a 200-million-euro ($219 million) long-term military aid package for Ukraine.

Russia's invasion has turned Ukraine into one of the most mined countries in the world, generating one of the largest demining challenges since the end of World War II.

"Lithuania is forming a demining coalition to mobilize military support for Ukraine as efficiently and quickly as possible," Nauseda said.

"The Western world must understand that this is not just the struggle of Ukraine, it is the struggle of the whole of Europe and the democratic world for peace and freedom," Nauseda said.

Ukraine has pleaded with its allies to keep supplying it with weapons amid signs of donor fatigue in some countries.

There is continued disagreement between Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. Congress on continuing military aid for Kyiv, while a 50-billion-euro ($55 billion) aid package from the European Union remains blocked due to a Hungarian veto.

But a NATO allies meeting in Brussels on January 10 made it clear that they will continue to provide Ukraine with major military, economic, and humanitarian aid. NATO allies have outlined plans to provide "billions of euros of further capabilities" in 2024 to Ukraine, the alliance said in a statement.

Zelensky warned during the news conference with Nauseda that delays in Western aid to Kyiv would only embolden Moscow.

"He (Russian President Vladimir Putin) is not going to stop. He wants to occupy us completely," Zelenskiy said.

"And sometimes, the insecurity of partners regarding financial and military aid to Ukraine only increases Russia's courage and strength."

Since the start of the year, Ukraine has been subjected to several massive waves of Russian missile and drone strikes that have caused civilian deaths and material damage.

Zelenskiy said on January 10 that Ukraine badly needs advanced air defense systems.

"In recent days, Russia hit Ukraine with a total of 500 devices: we destroyed 70 percent of them," Zelenskiy said. "Air defense systems are the number one item that we lack."

Meanwhile, in Ukraine, an all-out air raid alert was declared on the morning of January 10, with authorities instructing citizens to take shelter due to an elevated danger of Russian missile strikes.

"Missile-strike danger throughout the territory of Ukraine! [Russian] MiG-31Ks taking off from Savasleika airfield [in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region].

Don't ignore the air raid alert!' the Ukrainian Air Force said in its warning message on Telegram.
